Brian Klugman and Lee Sternthal, who worked on Tron Legacy, have been tapped to write Rex Mundi, Warner Bros.’ adaptation of a comic book that is being produced by Johnny Depp and his Infinitum Nihil shingle.

The comic was set in an alternate Europe in which the Protestant Reformation was crushed by the Catholic Church, resulting in the continuing of a medieval power structure where magic is also real. The story is set in 1933 and centers on a pathologist who investigates the mysterious death of the priest who found him as an orphan, a trail that ultimately leads to a quest for the Holy Grail.

Created by Arvid Nelson and Eric Johnson, the comic was first published by Image then later by Dark Horse. Warners picked up the rights in 2006 with Jim Uhls writing the initial script.

Nihil’s Christi Dembrowski is producing with Alan and Peter Riche. Dark Horse’s Mike Richardson is also producing

Klugman, an actor whose credits include Frasier and Castle, writes with Sternthal. The pair worked on Tron Legacy, sharing story by credit with Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz.

The duo, repped by ICM Brillstein Entertainment Partners and Myman Greenspan, are writing and directing The Words, an indie that has Bradley Cooper and Jeremy Irons attached to star. That movie is due to start shooting in June.

Johnny Depp is set to play vampire Barnabas Collins in Tim Burton’s upcoming film Dark Shadows and will be joined by Bond girl Eva Green (Casino Royale), who has been cast as the witch Angelique.

Based on the popular and campy gothic US television show from the 1960s, the story involves encounters with various monsters, werewolves and ghosts.

Previously reported, Jackie Earle Haley (Nightmare on Elm Street) and Bella Heathcote are in talks to join the cast. Heathcote will play Victoria, the governess on the estate, and is also set to be featured in Twylight Zones, a 1960s-set rock film by David Chase (The Sopranos).

The screenplay is by Burton’s scribe, John August (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory), and Seth Grahame-Smith, who wrote the mash-up novel Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and the book and screenplay for Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.

The film goes into production in April for release in 2012.

June 23, 2010   •  Category: News, Pirates Of The Caribbean0 Comments

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides has begun production and will be released on May 20, 2011 and in 3D, Walt Disney Pictures said on Monday, adding that Johnny Depp is reprising his role as Captain Jack Sparrow and Geoffrey Rush eturns as Captain Hector Barbossa.

However, Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley, who played pirate Will Turner and his love Elizabeth Swann in the previous three movies, have not signed on for the fourth installment.

Oscar-winner Penelope Cruz will play Sparrow’s love interest and the daughter of the pirate Blackbeard, portrayed by Ian McShane of Deadwood fame stars. The movie also stars Kevin R. McNally as Sparrow’s comrade Joshamee Gibbs and Sam Claflin as a “stalwart missionary”.

“In this action-packed tale of truth, betrayal, youth and demise, Captain Jack Sparrow crosses paths with a woman from his past, and he’s not sure if it’s love—or if she’s a ruthless con artist who’s using him to find the fabled Fountain of Youth,” Walt Disney Pictures said in its statement.

“When she forces him aboard the Queen Anne’s Revenge, the ship of the formidable pirate Blackbeard, Jack finds himself on an unexpected adventure in which he doesn’t know who to fear more – Blackbeard or the woman from his past,” it said.

Disney had said in April that French actress Astrid Berges-Frisbey will play a mermaid in the Jerry Bruckheimer Films and Walt Disney Pictures production. Depp has said he’s willing to star in seven Pirates movies. The first three films in the series have grossed more than $2.7 billion worldwide.
