The filming of The Man Who Killed Don Quixote had to be stopped in 2000 because of several reasons. But director Terry Gilliam is now re-launching the project, and Johnny is back on board!
Yes, his The Man Who Killed Don Quixote was stopped back in 2000, but Gilliam had to abandon the project following a freak storm that ruined some equipment and co-star Jean Rochefort got sick. But re-launching the project wasn’t just as easy as returning in a few years; Gilliam first had to win the rights back from an insurance company that wrested it away on behalf of the investors following the first failed attempt to make it.
And this week, Gilliam told reporters that he has reached an agreement for Johnny Depp to return to the film.
If you’re still wondering why Johnny is not in Cannes right now for the 52nd Annual Cannes Film Festival like he is supposed to, here’s an article to ease your minds! Apparently, he is too committed to the filming of his upcoming movie The Rum Diary in Puerto Rico.
Johnny Depp dropped out because of a commitment on his new movie shoot — in Puerto Rico for The Rum Diary. Because he is also a producer, Depp felt he could not get away to attend Cannes.
It is reported that Johnny Depp may work again with ‘Donnie Brasco’ director Mike Newell on the new film version of Western adventure ‘The Lone Ranger’.
Production Weekly reports that Newell is in talks to direct the new film, in which Depp will play Tonto.
Director Mike Newell “is in talks” to helm the reboot of The Lone Ranger, according to industry newspaper Production Weekly’s Twitter feed. Pirates of the Caribbean star Johnny Depp is already slated to star as sidekick Tonto in the long-dormant cowboy adventure franchise and it’s rumored that George Clooney will play the Lone Ranger himself, according to a BBC News report.
According to a lot of sources, director Gore Verbinski will not be returning to direct the fourth installment of Pirates of the Carribean.
Choosing to focus on ‘Bioshock’, director of ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ trilogy Gore Verbinski has informed ‘Pirates 4′ producers that he will not helm the fourth installment.
In a surprising twist to the development of “Pirates of the Caribbean 4″, the fourth installment of the pirate adventure series is now director-less. After having much success helming “Pirates of the Caribbean” trilogy, director Gore Verbinski has reportedly chosen to pass on directing the latest “Pirates” project.
“I had a fantastic time bringing ‘Pirates’ to life, and I am eternally grateful to Jerry, Johnny and the rest of the creative and production team,” the 45-year-old filmmaker was quoted by Variety explaining his exit. “I’m looking forward to all of us crossing paths again in the future.” Of his decision, he was said to have informed both Disney and producer Jerry Bruckheimer.
Though leaving “Pirates”, Verbinski will still work with “Pirates” star Johnny Depp as the two team up in “Rango”. As for his other future feature project, the director of Nicolas Cage-starring “The Weather Man” will put his focus on “Bioshock”, a video game adaptation about an underwater city haunted by crazed mutants and other strange things.
Though detailed information about “Pirates 4″ has remained tightly under wraps, it is said that the new project will be focusing solely on Jack Sparrow, which will be portrayed by Johnny Depp once again. In the new adventure to find the Fountain of Youth, he will have to team up with Captain Barbossa in order to “defeat some supernatural terror”. Keira Knightley has previously ruled out her return as Elizabeth Swann in the new project.

Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures and IMAX Corporation today announced that Alice in Wonderland, directed by Tim Burton and starring Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter, Anne Hathaway as the White Queen and Mia Wasikowska as Alice, will be released to IMAX(R) theatres simultaneously with the film’s wide release on March 5, 2010. The special IMAX(R) 3D release will be digitally re-mastered into the unparalleled image and sound quality of The IMAX Experience(R) with IMAX DMR(R) (Digital Re-Mastering) technology. This is the third film confirmed out of the five-film agreement between IMAX and Disney, which was announced on November 19, 2008.
Commenting on the announcement, Mark Zoradi, president, Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures Group, said, “If ever there was a film that cried out to be presented in Disney Digital 3D(TM) and the premium IMAX 3D format, Tim Burton’s fantastic interpretation of Alice in Wonderland is that film. This is going to be an eye-popping cinematic experience as Tim takes moviegoers down the rabbit hole and into the dimensional world filled with incredible characters, sly humor, and wild adventures. Disney’s partnership with IMAX is taking shape with two amazing films already on the schedule. We look forward to working with them in bringing exciting new experiences and quality entertainment to IMAX screens around the world.”
“Sure, I find it touching, honestly, but awards are not as important to me as when I meet a 10-year-old kid who says, ‘I love Captain Jack Sparrow.’ That’s real magic for me.”
